Dealing Honourable with One's Country

A story is credited to Dwight L. Moody - it is said that a follower met Mr. Moody on the street one day and asked the great evangelist where he was going.  "Why, to vote," was Mr. Moody's reply.  With that the follower asked, "If your citizenship is in heaven, why do you bother with such?"   Mr. Moody is reported to have said, "Even though my citizenship is in heaven, I still own property in Chicago."

We must always remember that we are a citizen of heaven and of the country in which we hold our earthly citizenship.  We have a duty to both.

As a citizen of this earthly country, we have an obligation to vote, to pay taxes, and to obey the laws of the land to the extent that our conscience is not violated by doing so.  If obeying a certain law means doing what we believe is wrong, then a higher authority takes over.  We must make any effort necessary to resist that law by peaceful means.

Some of us may be called and therefore let me encourage you to be active in politics and run for public office.  However, we should all consider that our most important job in regard to government is to pray for governmental leaders.

We should fulfill the biblical responsibility of being informed citizens so that we may pray intelligently for those in positions of power.
